Applying for a reception place for September 2024

Children start school in the September after their fourth birthday.

If your child was born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 they are due to start in reception class at a primary school in September 2024.

You can apply for a place from autumn the year before they are due to start reception. This year's application window runs from 1 September 2023 until 15 January 2024.

It’s important to apply by the deadline.

If your child attends a school nursery or has an older brother or sister at your chosen school, you must still apply. Children who go to a school nursery will not automatically get a reception place at the school.

If you live in North Yorkshire, you must apply via North Yorkshire County Council Admissions. If you live outside North Yorkshire e.g. in Bradford LEA, you must apply through your home local authority, even if you are applying for schools elsewhere.

Before you apply, you should research the local primary schools. This will help you de- cide which schools to put down as your preferences.

 How to apply

You can apply now through the eAdmissions website. https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/apply-place-primary-or-secondary-school

This guide explains how to apply for your child’s school place online. https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/guiding-you-through-admissions-process

The closing date for applications is 15 January 2024. If you make an on time application, the outcome of your application will be released on 16 April 2024.

If you apply after 15 January 2024 your application will be considered late and will be processed after all the on time applications.

Applying for an In-Year Admission

In-year admissions is when a child is looking for a school place during the academic year.

You can apply when:

you have moved to (or within) our area and need a school place

  • you want your child to move to another school in the same year group

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and you want to change their school, contact the SEND Service at NYCC.

Nursery admissions

Glusburn Primary School has a 26 place Nursery with children attending part-time (Mon to Weds lunchtime or Weds lunchtime to Friday).  Where space allows we have started to offer 30 hours of childcare.  This is allocated termly if there is space.

Parents can apply for a Nursery place any time after their child's second birthday. Pro- spective parents will need to contact the school office for the appropriate Nursery appli- cation form which needs to be completed and returned together with the child's birth certificate, proof of address and photo identification of both parents, if possible.

Children can be admitted to the Nursery in the September after their third birthday if there are places. Following allocation of part-time nursery places, 30 hour places will be allocated in May 2024 if there are places.  All of the families requesting a full-time place for Sept 2023 were successful.

Parents/carers should note that admission to the school's Nursery does not in any way guarantee a place in the primary school.

At Glusburn Nursery, we adhere to North Yorkshire’s primary school admissions policy when allocating places.

 Induction into Reception

We offer the following induction to children new to the Early Years Foundation Stage:-

  • A parent information meeting
  • Visits to the EYFS unit
  • We do not do a staggered start for our reception pupils – they start full time on the first day.

Nursery pupils have a staggered start through the first week.

Children then attend as normal unless they have any particular needs settling in, in which case special arrangements will be made as required.

Prospective parents/carers are welcome to come and view the school. The Headteacher will be available to show you around and answer any questions you may have.

We have an annual open day but tours and admission interviews are conducted as required. Please contact the school office to make an appointment.

For further information please refer to our admissions policy.
