The Curriculum in the Foundation Stage

Glusburn Foundation Stage Unit is a dynamic unit with a dynamic team to match! Our unit is constantly evolving to ensure our children love coming to school each day and find learning fun.

In EYFS we follow the Government's 2012 Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. The children’s learning and development is taught through seven areas of learning.

 These are:-

  1. Communication and Language
  2. Physical Development
  3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the World
  7. Expressive Arts and Design

We develop the children’s learning through all these areas in our dynamic Foundation Stage Unit. We pride ourselves on child initiated learning. This approach involves really getting to know the children as unique individuals and allowing them to plan the interests that we cover. This embodies our whole school ethos of respecting the rights of the child. In our foundation stage pages you will see the current interests and fascinations of the children in the unit. By allowing ourselves to follow the interests of the children we find that the children become highly engaged and motivated when learning.

As part of our curriculum we really emphasise the dispositions and attitudes that allow children to be fantastic learners. With the children we use language such as perseverance, team work, curiosity and fun. We want our children to believe they can be fantastic in all that they do by showing the characteristics of fantastic learners. We hope that this skill of recognising the qualities of a fantastic learning will travel with them throughout their life; making children Life Long Learners.

If you would like to know more about our approach to Phonics and mathematics please see the relevant pages in the Foundation Stage Classroom.
